Meet Karlene | ScratchJr and Scratch Coding Tutor

Experienced MAMA.codes tutor, Karlene, makes coding fun for kids. From Scratch mazes to games, they spark problem-solving and imagination.

Karlene joined MAMA.codes in 2018 and since then has been bringing lessons to life with energy and imagination. With experience teaching in schools and a background as a children’s entertainer, she knows exactly how to keep classes engaging, playful and confidence-building. Being a parent also gives her an extra insight into what makes learning enjoyable for kids.

What I enjoy most about teaching coding to children at MAMA.codes is watching their faces light up when something clicks. There’s such a special pleasure in seeing them enjoy figuring things out for themselves — testing, problem-solving, and suddenly realising they made the code work.”

Whether it’s a bouncing animation or a tricky bit of code finally clicking into place, Karlene thrives on seeing children’s pride and excitement shine through. One of Karlene’s favourite projects is the Scratch Maze as it’s a real turning point for students — it shows kids they’ve really cracked the concept of coordinates. Once the maze is complete, it transforms into a playable game that children can test, improve, and show off to friends and family. It’s learning, creativity and fun all rolled into one.

Outside of coding, Karlene is all about creativity — from face painting to party entertaining to artistic makeup. She loves sparking children’s imaginations in different ways.

For Karlene, coding is more than just tech skills. It teaches children how to think logically, solve problems and believe in their ideas — skills that will help them wherever life takes them.

Because coding is such a big part of the world they’re growing up in, giving them the tools to understand and create with it feels like giving them a real head start.”

Karlene has received amazing feedback from students and parents alike:

  • 9‑year-old daughter loved her session at The Carnegie early January 2025 and thought Karlene was a great teacher. She wants to go again!
